Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is recruiting a Software Developer to join the Formal Methods for System and Software (FM) Research Unit within the Digital Industry Center. The unit is a multidisciplinary team of around 35 researchers and developers working on formal methods and model-based design for complex embedded systems, with a research and development project in the railway domain carried out in collaboration with industrial partners such as Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.

The appointment is a fixed-term contract starting in September 2026 for an initial period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension. The role is offered on a full-time basis (38 hours per week) with part-time options depending on the candidate profile. The indicative gross annual salary is approximately €31,654, plus a performance/objectives bonus. The selected person will support the model-based design research line by developing and maintaining software tools and systems for the railway domain. Main activities include:

  • designing and implementing new functionalities within existing tools;
  • developing software systems that operate onboard trains or at trackside;
  • producing technical documentation to support project tasks and deliverables.

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology Engineering or equivalent professional experience;
  • solid programming skills in one or more of: Java, Python, C++, C, Rust;
  • practical experience with Git and common development and debugging environments;
  • good written and spoken English;
  • ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred / plus:

  • experience with Eclipse plugin development, GEF, JavaFX or ECore models;
  • experience with model-based design tools and languages such as Scade, SDL, SysML or Stateflow;
  • contributions to open-source projects;
  • knowledge in areas such as software engineering, satisfiability and constraint solving, model checking and formal verification, first-order logic and SMT solvers, formal analysis of hybrid systems, runtime verification and diagnosis, or formal safety assessment.
