Descrizione della Posizione Lavorativa

CMCC Foundation is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year position focused on ocean and sea-ice modelling with unstructured-grid ocean models. The successful candidate will report to the team leader and work in a multidisciplinary environment contributing to model development, numerical experiments, data analysis and interpretation of simulation results. Deadline: July 15th, 2026.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing scale-dependent processes, numerical schemes, parameterizations and computational workflows for global ocean model applications.
  • Developing, configuring and running global ocean simulations using unstructured-grid modelling approaches.
  • Testing and evaluating model performance across different spatial resolutions and dynamical regimes.
  • Analysing outputs to study large-scale and multiscale ocean dynamics (including circulation, mesoscale and submesoscale processes), air–sea interactions and variability.
  • Supporting model validation via comparisons with observations, reanalyses and other simulations.
  • Using high-performance computing platforms for large-scale numerical simulations and data processing.
  • Contributing to scientific papers, technical documentation, project deliverables and presentations at national and international meetings.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, with a background in numerical methods and modelling.
  • Experience developing numerical methods for geophysical fluid dynamics problems.
  • Experience in development and/or application of ocean circulation models, preferably using unstructured meshes.
  • Advanced programming skills in compiled languages (e.g. Fortran) and interpreted languages (e.g. Python), and experience with scientific and visualization libraries (e.g. xarray, pandas, Plotly, Matplotlib).
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environments and shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of parallel programming and high-performance computing (HPC) architectures.

Preferred: at least two recommendation letters; ability to work effectively in collaborative research teams with a proactive, collegial attitude and commitment to open knowledge sharing.

Duration, compensation and practical information:

  • The appointment is for 2 years. Contract type and gross annual salary will depend on qualifications and experience.
  • Welfare package available for minimum 12-month contracts.
  • Flexible working time according to internal policies.
  • Support for immigration procedures if required.
  • The researcher will be based at the CMCC Office in Bologna.
  • This vacancy will be advertised internally and externally.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) is a preferential condition. Some fiscal benefits may apply to repatriated workers or foreign researchers who meet the requirements established by Dlgs 147/2015 (repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (foreigners). CMCC is an equal-opportunity employer and evaluates applicants without regard to legally protected characteristics. Applicants should omit potentially discriminatory information from their CV.

By applying, candidates confirm they have read and accepted the CMCC Personnel Recruitment Rules and the Privacy Notice. Candidate information will be kept on file for up to one year.

Benefits

  • Welfare package (for minimum 12-month contracts).
  • Flexible working time per internal policies.
  • Immigration support if needed.
  • Opportunities to contribute to international research projects and publications.
