What we are looking for

We are recruiting four early-career researchers with a solid quantitative background to join the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) at the CMCC Foundation in Milan, Italy. Successful candidates will help build next-generation climate impact modelling systems that support climate adaptation, energy transitions and resilience planning in vulnerable regions worldwide. Their work will investigate how climate change propagates through linked human and natural systems, affecting energy systems, water resources, ecosystems, food production, infrastructure and socio-economic development.

About us

CMCC Foundation is a multidisciplinary research centre focused on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, business and policy. Our mission is to support sustainable growth, environmental protection and the design of adaptation and mitigation strategies. CMCC pursues rigorous, data-driven science, invests in training researchers and aims to provide information and tools to inform public debate and decision-making. We foster an inclusive, diverse workplace that values innovation and collaboration.

Role

The selected candidates will join the EIEE, which combines environmental and economic analysis to evaluate sustainable and socially inclusive climate strategies. EIEE provides impartial socio-economic research and policy engagement to inform environmental, energy and natural resource decisions at national and international levels.

Responsibilities

  • Develop integrated climate impact modelling approaches linking climate data with energy systems and socio-economic outcomes.
  • Assess climate risks and adaptation options for energy infrastructure and low-carbon transitions under changing climatic conditions.
  • Integrate climate, environmental, energy and socio-economic datasets for multi-sector analyses.
  • Develop indicators of climate risk, vulnerability and resilience to support policy and investment choices.
  • Apply data science and machine learning methods to enhance impact modelling, uncertainty analysis and scenario development.
  • Contribute to open, modular and scalable modelling frameworks for climate services and decision support.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across climate science, economics, engineering and AI.
  • Publish high-quality scientific research and take part in international projects and stakeholder engagement.
  • Contribute to the objectives of the EIEE Institute.

Mandatory requirements

  • MSc in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics or related fields.
  • Experience or strong interest in climate impacts, energy systems, environmental modelling or integrated assessment.
  • Experience handling large environmental and climate datasets.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with scientific libraries (e.g. xarray, pandas, numpy, scipy, geopandas).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); Italian is not required. Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel for project meetings and conferences.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a stakeholder-oriented mindset.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with machine learning or AI/data-driven techniques applied to environmental systems.
  • Familiarity with Earth system, hydrological or integrated assessment models.
  • Experience in scenario analysis, uncertainty quantification or decision-support applications.

Duration, compensation & benefits

The selected researchers will be based in the Milan CMCC office. The position will be offered as a Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract, starting no earlier than 15 September 2026 and lasting 12–24 months.
