Position: Two mid-level research positions (CMCC Position cod. 12839) at the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), CMCC Foundation, Milan. Application deadline: 2026-09-15.

The appointed researchers will advance next-generation climate impact modelling frameworks to support climate adaptation, energy transition and resilience planning in vulnerable regions worldwide. The role focuses on tracing how climate hazards propagate through coupled human–natural systems and on translating that information into actionable guidance for decision-makers and investment planning.

Working within interdisciplinary teams, the successful candidates will integrate Earth system information with impact models, socio-economic analysis, AI techniques and decision-support tools to assess impacts on energy systems, water resources, food production, ecosystems, infrastructure and socio-economic development.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of integrated climate impact modelling frameworks linking climate data with energy, socio-economic systems and adaptation strategies.
• Coordinate scientific activities across teams in climate science, economics, engineering, AI and environmental modelling.
• Design and perform multi-sectoral impact assessments and resilience analyses under future climate and socio-economic scenarios.
• Develop innovative methodologies that combine Earth system outputs, impact models, AI methods and decision-support systems.
• Define and develop climate risk, vulnerability and resilience indicators to inform policy and investment choices.
• Contribute to scientific coordination and project management of large national and international collaborative projects.
• Supervise PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scientists.
• Develop new research directions and strengthen collaborations with leading international institutions.
• Actively participate in fundraising, preparing competitive proposals (e.g. Horizon Europe, ERC, foundations, philanthropic initiatives).
• Publish high-quality scientific papers and represent CMCC/EIEE in international networks and conferences.

Mandatory requirements

• PhD in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Climate Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics or related fields.
• Proven experience in climate impact modelling, integrated assessment, Earth system applications or related quantitative areas.
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with scientific computing and environmental datasets.
• Experience developing models, performing scenario analysis and building quantitative assessment frameworks.
• Track record of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
• Experience in interdisciplinary and international research environments.
• Excellent communication and scientific writing skills; proficiency in English (spoken and written). Italian is not required.
• Willingness to travel for project meetings and conferences and to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred qualifications

• About 3–8 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.
• Experience coordinating research tasks or interdisciplinary work packages.
• Experience supervising MSc/PhD students or early-career researchers.
• Successful experience in proposal writing and fundraising for competitive projects.
• Experience engaging with stakeholders and conducting policy-oriented research.
• Familiarity with AI/data-driven methods applied to environmental systems and with Earth System Models, Integrated Assessment Models or energy system models.

Duration, compensation and practical information

• The positions are based at the CMCC office in Milan.
• The contract will be a Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract, starting no earlier than 1 October 2026 and lasting 12–24 months.
• Gross annual salary: €40,000 – €55,000 (salary within the range will be set according to experience, seniority and objective criteria).
• Welfare package: €2,000 per year.
• Flexible working time according to internal policies and support for immigration procedures if needed.
