Background: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers specialised medical aid to vulnerable populations affected by conflict or disaster. MSF Nederland in Italy manages Search and Rescue (SAR) activities in the central Mediterranean operating with the vessel Oyvon, providing life-saving assistance and basic services.

Purpose of the role: Plan, coordinate and supervise all logistics activities for the project area, covering non-medical assistance (ship operations, food, water, hygiene and sanitation, and essential non-food items) to guarantee an efficient project implementation.

Main responsibilities

  • Manage order processing and administrative logistics tasks (orders, insurances, vehicle contracts, etc.).
  • Ensure proper functioning and maintenance of the vehicle fleet and engines, and upkeep of all technical equipment.
  • Organise internal and external transport and ensure reliable means of communication.
  • Support installation and maintenance of functional office spaces and guesthouses for international staff, ensuring adequate living conditions.
  • Work closely with maritime crew, HR-Admin and Supply Manager to coordinate ship port calls and to prepare the vessel for prompt departures.
  • Assist with vessel cleaning, resupply, stock counts, ordering and deliveries at the end of rotations.
  • Receive maintenance requests from the ship team, advise, and identify technicians to carry out repairs; perform basic hands-on maintenance onboard across technical areas (including cold chain, biomedical, health facility and shelter maintenance).
  • Manage base logistics in Licata, including guesthouses and office support; oversee a car and a van fleet.
  • Act as a back-up user for Unifield and support the Supply Manager and Information System Specialist when needed.
  • Contribute to project planning and budgeting together with the Logistics Coordinator, Project Coordinator and finance department.
  • Provide regular reporting and carry out any other duties assigned by the Project or Logistics Coordinator.

Working context and location

The position is based in Licata, Sicily, the home port of Oyvon. The role supports both boat-based and onshore SAR operations to ensure smooth project functioning. Occasional time on board during SAR rotations may be required to better support the team. During peak activity periods, weekend work is likely.

Profile and qualifications

  • Education: secondary education with a technical diploma or a technical university degree (preferably in engineering). Technical mechanical skills are an asset.
  • Experience: minimum of 2 years in logistics-related roles; prior experience with MSF or other NGOs is desirable.
  • Technical requirements: previous maritime experience OR proven hands-on maintenance and construction skills.
  • Knowledge: user-level MS Office and basic IT support competencies.
  • Competencies: behavioural flexibility, teamwork and cooperation, telecommunications awareness, and ICT security awareness and management.
  • Legal: candidates must hold a permit to work in Italy.

Benefits

  • Contract: fixed-term contract (12 months), full-time.
  • Salary: gross annual salary between €35,420 and €38,248, depending on MSF experience.
  • Other: level 2 of Italian CCNL of Commerce; working permit required for Italy.
