Position: Senior Environmental Scientist – Agri-food Systems & GHG Fluxes. Application deadline: July 31st, 2026.

Role summary: The researcher will investigate how agricultural management affects greenhouse gas emissions and removals, support the development and application of GHG accounting and reporting approaches, compare bottom-up and top-down estimates, contribute to model development and data integration, and produce technical reports and scientific papers within national and international projects.

Key responsibilities

• Quantitatively assess impacts of agricultural management on GHG emissions, carbon sequestration and related environmental indicators.
• Develop and apply GHG accounting and reporting methodologies aligned with internationally recognized frameworks (e.g. IPCC Guidelines).
• Analyse agricultural, environmental and climate datasets to estimate mitigation potential under different management and climate scenarios.
• Support development and use of models and decision-support tools to evaluate sustainable agricultural practices.
• Contribute to the design and execution of research activities within national and European research and innovation projects.
• Prepare scientific publications, technical reports, project deliverables and policy briefs.
• Work with multidisciplinary and international teams and engage relevant stakeholders.
• Support preparation of research proposals and help secure competitive research funding.

Requirements

• PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of professional experience in research on GHG fluxes, GHG accounting, or climate change mitigation in the agri-food sector.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Duration, contract and workplace

The selected candidate(s) will be based at the CMCC office in Viterbo. The role is offered under a Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract (Co.co.co.), starting in September 2026 for an initial period of four months with the possibility of renewal.

Compensation

The gross annual salary range is €26,000 to €45,000, determined according to experience, seniority and technical expertise, following objective and gender-neutral criteria. Flexible working hours are available in line with internal policies. Support with immigration procedures will be provided if required.
